When you use MSDN or your textbook to learn or reference syntax, certain symbols are used to represent certain terms and conditions.  When you understand them, half your problems are solved

( ) Parentheses
[ ] Square brackets Indicates that the items contained within them are optional
| Pipe symbol It means "or".  You will find it standing between two or more items, which tells you that either one of the items may be used
" " Quotation marks Is used to indicate strings (text), otherwise Visual Basic will want to interpret it as code
' Apostrophe mark Is used when you want to comment your code.  Text that has the apostrophe prefixed will be displayed as green and therefore Visual Basic will ignore it
